Comments:  We have already said that we believe PCGS got the grade right when you drop out the color.  The coin has a lot of eye appeal because of the iridescent quality of the toning and the overall mottled effect.

We like the coin for its somewhat psychedelic or marbled quality.

Speculative History

The overall reflectiveness and color spectrum seem to us to place this as a bag toned coin.  But there is an inconsistent line of cyan color that runs vertically behind the ear and then turns to cover the top of the hair and crown.  This would indicate that this area was covered.

The darker area around the face is actually earlier toning than the lighter cyan.  So could this toning have come from a coin wrapper and this is an end roll coin?  Perhaps that is the answer because the reverse is almost devoid of color.

Stages and Colors

This is a late first and early second stage coin.  The light gold, amber, and russet are all first stage.  The cyan, pale mint green, and orange are all second cycle.
