Serial Number:  27124038

Grade: Mint State 63

VAM: 26 - Doubled 18

VSS Number:  006316

Comments:  Mint luster and strike make this a solid MS 63 coin, but there is a significant bag mark that starts at the bridge of the nose and extends almost below the ear.  The 18 doubling is easily determined, and  there is the beginning of the die chip in the upper loop of the first 8.

There is very attractive rainbow toning on the reverse.  The mint mark is centered and upright.  There is some minor pitting of the eagle, and the often seen over polishing of the fourth left wreath cluster.

Speculative History

How this toning arrived on the reverse of the coin is a mystery to us.  You can visualize a coin overlaying the right, but the straight gap in the center is a mystery.

Usually we have some guess, but this one will be fun to investigate.

Stages and Colors

We believe this is a late third cycle and with some colors into the fourth cycle coin.  The yellow-gold color seems to dominate each band, and the colors seem to migrate from gold through to deep magenta or purple.
