Comments:   This is a nice solid coin for the grade and has sufficient, but light, bag marks.  We would have given this one a plus grade based on comparison with other MS 63 examples.

VAM 53 is the most common VAM in this series and we have dozens of examples in a wide range of grades.  The VAM is easy to spot in several different ways.  But this coin is an early die state because it is missing a die crack that runs through the mint mark on almost all examples.

Speculative History

This does looks to us like a bag toned coin primarily because of the royal blue and magenta in close proximity.  There is only a faint trace of color on the reverse, so the source of the color relied on obverse contact.

Missing VAMs

These colors would be about in the middle range of colors for a bag toned coin.  The yellow to blue to magenta can be an indicator of bag toning.
