Comments:  We excluded this coin from our toned collection for several reasons.  First, the band of toning is very small and only at the top of the obverse.  Second, there is little here that is new and there is more discolor than color.

That said, when you look under all the golden color this is a pretty nice coin.  There are no major bag marks on the devices, although there is a shallow abrasion on Liberty's cheek.

VAM 4 can be more than confusing because the written description is almost always tentative.  In this example the first 1 is also doubled, which is acceptable.  The first 8 is doubled and the last 1.  The last 1 is doubled in a manner that is reminiscent of VAM 15 where the top outside of the flag is doubled as an outline.  All of these features are visible on the enlarged photographs.

To make it even more confusing, the coin can be clashed or unclashed without letter transfer.  This coin has a small line at the neck which illustrates this phenomena.  But it is also clashed at the lips and back of the hair.  The reverse is clashed at the top of the eagle's right wing and outside the left wing.
